Aims and Learning Objectives
The seminar will feature a range of digital impression technologies, including intraoral scanners, laboratory model scanners, and the Mimetrik Cubit360 extra-oral scanner.
Digital impressions have become an integral part of modern restorative and prosthodontic workflows, offering seamless integration with CAD/CAM technologies. However, intraoral scanners present specific clinical limitations, particularly regarding resolution at the preparation margin, cross-arch accuracy in full-arch scanning, the effects of mandibular flexion, and the challenges of capturing edentulous anatomy.
In this seminar, Professor Andy Keeling draws on current research and real clinical examples to explore the strengths and limitations of both direct and indirect digital impression techniques.
By the end of this seminar, attendees will:
- Understand the current limits of both intraoral and laboratory scanner resolutions
- Recognize the sources of error in full-arch intraoral digital impressions, including cross-arch inaccuracy and mandibular flexion, as well as strategies to minimize them.
- Select the most appropriate impression technique - intraoral scanning or extra-oral impression/model scanning - based on the clinical situation, including crown & bridge, implant, edentulous, and removable prosthodontic cases
- Apply good clinical technique that underpins success with any impression method, including moisture control, gingival retraction, and rigid custom trays
- Have a hands-on session with scanner and a Q&A session with Andy
